How do I use the SBB train system in Zurich?
SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) tickets can be bought at machines at all train stations, via the SBB Mobile app, or at the Travel Center at Zurich HB. The ZVV app also covers city transport. Validate your ticket before boarding (validators on platforms or at station entrances). Most intercity trains are InterCity (IC) or InterRegio (IR) services — no seat reservation needed unless specified. The SBB app is available in English and is the easiest way to plan and buy tickets.
Is a Zurich travel card or single tickets better value?
For stays over 3-4 days, a ZVV day pass or multi-day pass beats individual tickets. For monthly stays, a subscription zone card is considerably cheaper than buying singles. Zone 110 monthly pass: CHF 87 (saves money if you take more than 20 rides/month). For tourists, the Zürich City Card (24h, 48h, 72h options) includes public transport plus museum discounts — good value for sightseeing-heavy visits.
Should I take a taxi or Uber in Zurich?
Both taxis and Uber operate in Zurich. Traditional taxis charge CHF 6-8 flagfall plus CHF 4-5/km — a city centre trip is typically CHF 15-25. Uber prices in Zurich are similar or slightly lower than traditional taxis (less than in many cities due to Swiss regulation). For airport runs, both cost CHF 50-70+. Public transport (train: CHF 7.20, tram: CHF 4.40) is almost always faster and cheaper for regular trips. Taxis are worthwhile for late-night journeys when public transport is less frequent.
Can I rent an electric scooter in Zurich?
Yes — e-scooter sharing is available in Zurich through operators including Tier, Lime, and Bird. Find and unlock scooters via their apps. Scooters are limited to 25km/h and must be ridden in the road (not on pavements). Parking must be in designated spots or at bike racks — random scooter parking is being increasingly restricted. Helmets are not legally required for e-scooters in Switzerland but are strongly recommended. Prices are typically CHF 1 to unlock + CHF 0.25-0.35/minute.
How to get from Zurich Airport to city centre?
The quickest and cheapest option is the direct train from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Zurich Hauptbahnhof: 10-12 minutes, trains every 5-10 minutes, CHF 7.20 (Zone 121+110 ticket). Buy at the airport train station ticketing machines before descending to the platform. Taxis cost CHF 50-70 and take 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. Uber is similar in price. The 768 express bus to central Zurich is a slower but occasionally useful option. There is no dedicated airport bus like in other cities — the train is the standard choice.
